Have you ever asked ChatGPT more than a hundred questions? So you’ve probably already consumed a liter of water, or even much more.
Half a liter of water for 20 to 50 prompts is the average consumption of ChatGPT. A waste of resources which is not that surprising when we are talking regarding new technologies which are often very consuming when it comes to blue gold.
Although we already knew that the OpenAI language model consumed a lot of water, we did not know the exact figure, which left a lot of room for speculation. But thanks to a study carried out by the University of California, we now know approximately how much water a question asked to the world-famous chatbot costs.
A monstrous consumption which is not without posing major problems with the long-term viability of this technology, whether ecologically or economically. Large tech companies, like Microsoft and OpenAI, are well aware of this, but intend to find a solution to drastically reduce this consumption.
Generative AI is a relatively young technology, so there is hope regarding the possibility of a less water-intensive language model. But this remains far from guaranteed.
