The skin foundation It was created in 2016 by Dr. Jorge Sánchez, currently they have a board of directors made up of several dermatologists, focused on providing free clinical help, continuing education for health professionals, and soon they plan to be able to grant scholarships in dermatological research.
“Our clinics are 360, it includes what is the evaluation, the consultation, we provide if the patient needs any procedure, we make our operating room, so to speak, and we also provide medicines, this is totally free for the population,” he said. Dalia Morales, representative of the skin foundation.
Accessibility limitation as a reason
However, Morales said that one of the great reasons for the work that the foundation does is due to the limited scope of specialists on the island, “we try to find towns where the number of dermatologists is less, to be able to take them to these patients the service,” he adds.

Likewise, he mentioned that one of the reasons for continuing the functions of the foundation is the gratitude of the people, “this is integrated from medical students, doctors, private companies and the media have supported us a lot in these initiatives”.
For this reason, he stressed that when there is an unfavorable prognosis, the organization provides follow-up to these people, “being able to count on dermatologists, who give them the priority and the urgency that this patient needs so much, it is nice and comforting to have those allies who always say yes to you,” added Morales.

continuing education
The skin foundation In its continuing education programs on updated dermatology topics, they are offered to health professionals such as primary and family doctors, pediatricians, internists, and general practitioners, among others.

Morales emphasized that skin cancer in Puerto Rico is seen more in the eastern and coastal areas of the island, “it depends on the area, there are some particular conditions that have a higher concentration than in others.”

Along the same lines, he stressed that basal cell carcinoma is the most frequent type of cancer in the population, despite not being as aggressive as melanoma, it is of special care.
On the other hand, there are several patients With dermatological diseases prevalent in Puerto Ricans such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, among many others, it is therefore important that people seek professional help when they experience changes in their skin, since timely treatment depends on this.
