The World Health Organization called on world leaders to build political commitment and increase action to invest in a “One Health” approach to address common threats that affect the health and well-being of people, animals, plants and the environment together.
For his part, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, said: “The One Health approach is self-evident from the perspective of public health, economics and logic,” adding: “It is clear that we can only protect and promote the health of humans by protecting and promoting the health of animals and the planet on which they depend.” “It affects all forms of life, and we welcome the growing political consensus on the principle of One Health at the global level, and we are committed to supporting countries to translate the concept of One Health into actions that make a difference.”
He explained that the health impacts of the climate crisis, water pollution, food safety, and the increase in disease outbreaks are among the biggest challenges that humanity and the planet face today. For example, air pollution leads to the death of 7 million people and causes losses amounting to 3 trillion US dollars every year, and the complications lead to Antimicrobial resistance results in 5 million deaths each year, with expected economic losses reaching US$100 trillion by 2050.
The estimated range of human deaths from Corona, a newly emerging disease, reached 6 million deaths in 2022, along with economic losses of approximately 3.5 trillion US dollars. Among international organizations, the “One Health” approach is led by the Quadrilateral Cooperation on One Health. It includes the World Health Organization, along with the Food and Agriculture Organization, the United Nations Environment Programme, and the World Organization for Animal Health.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization said in October 2022, the Quad launched the One Health Joint Action Plan (2022-2026), as a framework for advancing the One Health approach and scaling it up sustainably. Moreover, in December this year, a guide on the implementation of the Joint Plan of Action will be released at the national level to provide practical guidance to countries on how to adopt and adapt the Joint Plan of Action. The “One Health” approach is a sustainable way of living together on this planet, and can be considered a way of life, Individuals can contribute to its implementation in many different ways, by ensuring that wildlife remains in their natural habitats and does not participate in trade, by taking antibiotic treatments as prescribed by health professionals and completing their doses as prescribed, and by practicing healthy habits related to pets and ensuring that they receive Required vaccinations, avoiding carbon-intensive transport and seeking to increase mobility by walking or cycling for short trips will all help, and everyone has their role in One Health.
