The Importance of Responsible Tourism: Keeping Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure Clean and Safe

The heat wave pushes many Belgians to want to cool off, for example by swimming in the Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure. Access to the site is free and water activities are offered there, as well as walks.

These artificial bodies of water are successful and it shows: the garbage cans are overflowing and waste is strewn on the ground. Packets of crisps, bottles or barbecue leftovers, the banks don’t look good. Visitors notice:It is disrespectful. People got dirty“, regrets a tourist, “Friday, we already came, it was not so dirty. There wasn’t as much rubbish and the bins weren’t filled. Here, we turn around in any direction, there is waste everywhere!“, regrets another.

Philippe Fourmeau, spokesperson for the ASBL Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure, explains that the waste is collected, but there is too much. Visitors must also take responsibility: “This weekend, there were regarding ten people on the site to do the cleaning, but with the good weather, there were a lot of people on the site so inevitably it creates a bit of waste. (…) When some people throw their waste on the ground and not in the bins, there is a real problem, perhaps with education.

To deal with this phenomenon, those responsible for the field are trying to act: “We try to communicate, we try to raise awareness as much as possible in order to prevent this from happening too much.“.

The summer season does not start until June 15, before this date, the cleaning teams are reduced and there is no lifeguard near the water.
