The best way to “treat” a disease, whether human or animal, is to prevent it from occurring.
Thinking regarding health as a collective and interdependent concept above the idea of individual and human health is the key to understanding the concept of “One Health”. Every November 3, “World One Health Day” is celebrated. This premise, which has become even more important in the midst of the pandemic, recognizes the interconnection between the health of humans, animals and the ecosystem. Keeping this undisputed interrelation in mind is key when acting in any of the three areas and foreseeing their potential impacts or consequences, both negative and positive.
According to the WHOA (World Organization for Animal Health), 60% of the pathogens that cause illness in people come from domestic or wild animals. Consequently, the importance of animal health is indisputable in terms of both its economic impact, with regard to food production, and its socio-environmental impact on the possible transmission of zoonotic diseases. These types of conditions, which spread from animals to people, can constitute a significant threat to public health.

So why do we talk regarding the importance of animal health in the One Health approach? Because taking care of the health of animals will help protect everyone. To delve into animal health care, it is important to understand that the first and most important step is prevention.
The best way to “treat” a disease, whether human or animal, is to prevent it from occurring. To achieve this, we must place preventive health at the center. With regard to large animals, efficient biosafety protocols must be established to prevent disease carriers from entering disease-free establishments, and comply with a correct health plan, to prevent different infectious agents from affecting the health of the animals. and, consequently, of the people who interact with them. As for pets, keeping their vaccination schedule up to date and taking them to the veterinarian regularly will be of utmost importance to take care of their health and that of those around them.

At the same time, it is important to consider the relevance of carrying out a correct diagnosis to take appropriate measures and treatments to also avoid the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Thanks to new technologies and correct professional advice, it is possible to make diagnoses that are not only more precise and accurate, but much faster.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), 75% of emerging infectious human diseases have animal origin. This is why at Biogenesis Bagó we work on the prevention of animal diseases, many of which can be transmitted and affect people. We believe that maintaining a health status through diagnoses, epidemiological surveillance, biosafety practices, along with health plans executed in a timely manner, are key to protecting animals, health sector professionals and the ecosystem. On One Health Day, we reinforce our commitment to offering solutions to preserve the well-being of all the inhabitants of our planet.
