The president of theUnited Nations General AssemblyCsaba Kőrösi, stressed in a meeting on the use of the right of veto that humanitarian action must be guided by the principles of impartiality.
“Humanitarian action must always be guided by the principles of impartiality, neutrality and independence. As such, effective humanitarian aid can never be held hostage by any political interest,” he said during the debate held at the headquarters of the international organization in New York.
He noted that life-saving humanitarian operations must not be held hostage by political interests, adding that the lives of those in need “should never be reduced to the tactics of geopolitical games”.

Addressing the members of the Security Council, Mr. Kőrösi called for giving “priority to long-term cooperation rather than division and the humanitarian imperative”. “Together we have the power to make a meaningful difference,” he said.
The right of veto is a special voting right of permanent member states in the Security Council, whereby if one of the five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – casts a negative vote, the resolution or decision automatically fails.
