The Importance of Choosing the Right Sunscreen: Understanding SPF and UVA Protection

2023-07-15 11:02:00

The sun can be dangerous to health. It is essential to protect yourself, especially with a sunscreen adapted to your skin.

Sun rays can be responsible for skin cancer (melanoma, carcinoma). When exposed to the sun, especially on the beach, it is important to protect yourself from these rays with clothing and/or sunscreen.

PF 30, 50… what do the protection indices of sun creams correspond to? How to choose them?

The SPF, the Sun Protection Factor, determines the protection once morest UVB rays. “The higher it is, the better the protection“, according to Doctor Éric Gnanadicom.

A good sunscreen must have a High SPF and good UVA protectionaccording to the President of the Hérault Cancer League.

As UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin (the dermis), they are mainly responsible for pigment spots, skin aging and wrinkles.

UVB rays penetrate less deeply, however are responsible for sunburn, burns, blisters and to a large extent skin cancer, recalls Carole Reiss. The trainer at the Terrade school details the four levels of *SPF, or IP, or FPS:

From 6 to 10 = weak protection, From 15 to 25 = medium, From 30 to 50 = high, 50 and + = very high.

These protection indices are the ratio between the exposure time necessary to induce sunburn with and without cream.

There are two types of protection, recalled by Carole Reiss:

organic or chemical filters which act by absorbing UV radiation; mineral filters acting by reflection of UV rays.
