Many people are aware of the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day, however, dentist Dr. Neri Whitley warned of a mistake we all make when it comes to this habit, which can damage our teeth.

Neri advised not to brush your teeth following eating breakfast.

She explained: “Although eating breakfast can outweigh brushing our teeth in your morning routine, it is wise to brush before eating to protect your teeth,” according to the British newspaper “Express.”

He continued: “After eating, your teeth need a little time to remineralize, and this is especially the case when consuming highly acidic foods or drinks such as orange juice or jam.”

He pointed out: “If you brush your teeth less than an hour following eating, you are more at risk of eroding your tooth enamel.”

However, if you prefer to brush your teeth following eating, waiting an hour following eating can help avoid enamel erosion.

Tooth erosion differs from cavities caused by bacteria, but it causes a gradual loss of the tooth surface, and also causes the teeth to suffer from the following:

become distorted

Become sensitive to heat and cold

Looks shorter, due to wear

Chip or break more easily

It has sharp edges.

The doctor also advised once morest making some other common mistakes in the field of oral hygiene, including:

Using the same toothbrush for a long time:

Changing your toothbrush regularly ensures that you can clean your teeth properly. Over time, our toothbrush bristles become soft and are not as effective, so you should change your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head once every three to four months to prevent this.

Not staying properly hydrated:

“While staying hydrated can offer a range of wider health benefits, it also goes a long way to protecting oral health,” she advised.

When we don’t get enough water, our mouths can become dry, creating an environment in which bacteria can thrive and lead to damage such as cavities.

Drinking water also helps flush out food particles and bacteria from the teeth, especially following eating meals.

Rush into routine:

The doctor warned that brushing your teeth too quickly may mean that you are not brushing your teeth properly, or that you may harm your gums or teeth.

To avoid this, brush your teeth for two minutes each time or twice a day.
