Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) — Abdul Khaliq Abdullah, an academic and professor of political science in the UAE, commented on reports regarding Iran’s imminent receipt of the first batch of Sukhoi-35 aircraft from Russia.

The Emirati academic wrote, on his Twitter account, on Saturday: “Iran will receive the first batch of Russian SU-35 aircraft this coming week, in a move that indicates Russia’s complete strategic bias towards Iran, the greatest threat to the security of the Arab Gulf.”

In March, Iran announced the conclusion of a contract with Russia for the purchase of Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets, coinciding with reports regarding Moscow using Iranian-made drones in the war in Ukraine.

The conventional arms embargo imposed by the United Nations on Iran in 2007 expired in October 2020.

The Iranian Air Force has Russian, American and Chinese combat aircraft of relatively old models, while the Su-35 is a fourth-generation combat aircraft.
