The construction of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories is impeding the resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock stated this at a joint press conference with her Palestinian counterpart Riyadh al-Maliki in Berlin.
“Construction of Israeli settlements [на палестинских территориях] illegal… Residents of Israel should be as safe as residents of the Palestinian territories. The suffering of the people of Palestine can only end when the suffering of the people of Israel ends. This conflict can only be resolved through a two-state formula. The conflict cannot be resolved by military means alone,” Berbock said, as quoted by TASS.
The world community is working to ensure that both peoples can coexist peacefully, even if “now this seems to be very far away,” the head of the German Foreign Ministry noted.
The Telegram channel “Bild in Russian,” meanwhile, called Berbock’s meeting with al-Maliki a “potential scandal.”
“In the government of the long-term leader of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas Al-Maliki is considered far from the most radical minister, but he also attracted attention for his anti-Semitic statements. In the early 1990s, al-Maliki was a member of the terrorist group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which is banned in Germany. In particular, some of its members participated in the massacre of Israelis on October 7 last year,” writes TK.
It is noted that al-Maliki never clearly condemned the actions of the Hamas group, whose militants invaded Israel and killed more than 1,200 people, but he repeatedly called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
“Today, the Foreign Minister of the Palestinian Authority will most likely ask Annalena Berbock for further support under the pretext that otherwise Hamas will take control of the West Bank,” TK suggested.
As reported EADailythe Israeli government has approved the decision to participate in a security meeting in Cairo today with the participation of the United States, Egypt and Qatar to discuss developments in a possible prisoner exchange deal between Hamas and Israel, al-Sharq al-Awsat wrote with with reference to information from the Israel Broadcasting Corporation (ITRK).
It was noted that the decision was made following several days of hesitation, taking into account what the Israelis called “Hamas’ hardline position in the exchange deal.”
