[이데일리 이순용 기자] As a result of analyzing patients with rotator cuff tears requiring surgical treatment of the shoulder joint, more than 4 out of 10 patients were confirmed to be vitamin D deficient.

Inje University Ilsan Paik Hospital Orthopedics Professor Lee Jae-hoo’s research team analyzed the blood vitamin D concentration of 176 patients who underwent surgery for ruptured rotator cuff of the shoulder joint from December 2017 to July 2019, and found that 44.3% (78 patients) It was found to be less than 20 ng/mL, which is a vitamin D deficiency level.

The research team found that vitamin D deficiency (20-30 ng/mL) was 26.7% (47 patients), and among patients with rotator cuff tears, vitamin D deficiency or deficiency accounted for 71% of all patients.

Professor Lee Jae-hoo of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Ilsan Paik Hospital, who treats the shoulder joint, said, “Vitamin D has already been shown through numerous studies that it plays an important role in the health and healing of the musculoskeletal system, including the rotator cuff and the human body’s muscles and tendons.” It was confirmed that vitamin D deficiency and deficiency are quite high in Korean patients with rotator cuff tears requiring surgical treatment in the joint.”

The research team confirmed that among the patients studied, patients who mainly worked ‘indoor’ had more vitamin D deficiency or deficiency than those who worked outdoors. As a result of comparative analysis between outdoor workers and indoor workers among rotator cuff tear surgery patients, the risk of vitamin D deficiency was 3.2 times higher in indoor workers.

Professor Lee Jae-hoo said, “Vitamin D is synthesized in the body by directly accepting UVB rays from the ultraviolet rays through the skin. It can be seen as the best method possible.”

The results of this study were published in ‘Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery’, an international journal of the Korean Orthopedic Society.
