The Impact of the Pandemic on Workload: How to Find Work-Life Balance

The hours spent at work for a week have increased by 3.3 hours since the arrival of the pandemic in 2020, according to a study by the Center of Expertise in Occupational Health and Safety Management at Laval University.

Post-pandemic working conditions are often valued, with the arrival of telework. However, telecommuting or not, there is a transformation in the workplace, and even more so in terms of workload. For Mr. Fournier, the pandemic has created a phenomenon of “we are available continuously”, which disrupts privacy.

“It’s a new reality. The study shows us another portrait of the situation. What we see is that working conditions are changing,” adds the professor and director of the management department at Laval University, Pierre-Sébastien Fournier.

Recent studies carried out in the United States prove that employees “work 48 minutes more per day, attend 13% more meetings and many notice a decrease in their working conditions”, according to data provided by Mr. Fournier.

“Time has intensified”

Employees tend to schedule their work week for a 2-3 week workload. However, when something unexpected happens, it may delay their plans. “It makes the work very intense and it can have an impact on extra work time,” notes the professor.

According to data from the Université Laval study, 55% to 60% of employees say they have difficulty balancing work and family. “We have to find ways to better distribute this workload. It’s often taboo to talk regarding it, but we can’t sweep it under the rug. We have to explore solutions”, insists the director of the management department.

As an employee, Mr. Fournier emphasizes the importance of setting limits and respecting them.
