The Impact of the Israeli Blockade on Gaza’s Power Plant and its Humanitarian Crisis

The only power plant in Gaza has stopped working due to the Israeli blockade. The operation of the power plant was stopped when the fuel shortage worsened. Following the attack by Hamas, Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza. Israel also cut off fuel supplies to Gaza. The plant is shutting down because Israel is blocking fuel supplies through the Rafah Gate, making generators unable to run even partially. As all basic services in Gaza depend on electricity, people’s lives are expected to worsen. Israel formed an emergency wartime cabinet and unity government ahead of the ground offensive.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday agreed to a deal with former general Benny Gantz, head of the opposition National Unity Party. Some opposition leaders have previously called for the exclusion of hard-right members of Netanyahu’s coalition. The deal comes amid a blackout in Gaza. Gaza, one of the most densely populated areas of 140 square miles, with nearly two million people, has been completely cut off from the rest of the world for 17 years. As the fighting continues unabated, people are struggling without food, water and essential medicines.

The United Nations has stated that the number of people who have fled due to the conflict has exceeded 1.90 lakh.
US National Security Adviser Jack Sullivan stated that talks are ongoing with Israel and Egypt to allow safe passage for civilians in Gaza.
