Red Bull F1’s Dr Helmut Marko says he doesn’t regret the “brutal” decision to fire AlphaTauri rookie Nick de Vries.

■ Changed to motivate the team

A Red Bull F1 source said the decision was made because Dutchman De Vries and the rest of the struggling junior team under the energy drink company’s umbrella were “stagnation”.

“Nick de Vries did not live up to our expectations,” explained Marko in Hungary.

“At the same time, AlphaTauri fell to the bottom and two new managers came in. Franz Tost is retiring. Motivation and passion seem to have waned a bit from the team,” added the 80-year-old Marco.

“A change of drivers can always have a positive effect. It’s the emotional side.”

Against this background, not only Red Bull, but also McLaren’s performance was sluggish, and Daniel Ricciardo, who had been on the “bench” for half a year, returned to the race.

And Ricciardo’s performance hit the possibility of Hiroki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) eventually moving to Red Bull Racing to replace Sergio Perez.

“The positive momentum he (Ricciardo) brought to the team and the stabilization of the technical statements and changes,” Marko said.

“The (driver) change worked perfectly.”

But Marco has denied rumors that Ricciardo might replace Perez as early as 2024. Perez, a Mexican who has fallen into a slump, has already signed a contract for next year.
