The Impact of Political Violence on Society: Sociologist Ousmane Ba’s Analysis and Solutions for Senegal

Cases of murders of great atrocity have been observed in recent times. To explain it, sociologist Ousmane Ba points to the violence in the political environment which has had consequences on society. He finds that the State must take into account the needs of the population, especially young people, so that the situation can be changed.

More and more barbaric murders are being deplored in Senegal. How do you explain this violence?

Violence is inherent to all human society. A society without violence does not exist, but a society must be able to put in place strategies and levers to be able to curb it. What should be noted mainly in Senegal is that the political field has supplanted other areas of activity, namely the economy, education, etc. It is transversal in such a way that when there are repercussions, (the play of actors , conflicts), we feel the impact in other daily activities. Senegal is heading towards a presidential election, this election is the trigger for this proliferation of violence, whether verbal, physical or symbolic.

What is the risk of this violence persisting?

This violence risks creating a breakdown of institutions. Political parties are private associations, so that does not pose any problems. But if it affects institutions, to the point that we witness conflicts, the entire nation will suffer. The question is should we have reached this level? The answer, in my opinion, is that we have not been able to implement the strategies necessary to emerge from Covid-19. In addition, there has been, in the meantime, an exponential increase in the population.

What solutions can be considered?

The authorities must read carefully and in depth the latest Senegal census which says that half of the population is under 19 years old. This means that we have a very young population. In this youth, we have teenagers. From this moment on, we will have to expect all kinds of violence and conflicts over their needs. We must ask ourselves whether economic growth can satisfy this segment of society, in terms of jobs. We must also ask ourselves whether the training is adequate for the world of work. It’s all cocktail. If we want to do an analysis, it must be systemic to understand what Senegalese society is going through. Public authorities should examine in depth the conclusions of Senegal’s censuses, trying to take into account the needs of youth and women. We must also raise awareness among young people regarding the choice of short-term disciplines and not go towards disciplines that do not meet aspirations and leave only a few people to do continuing education from preschool to doctorate. Public resources must also be distributed equitably; that every Senegalese can find themselves there and feel the growth in their pockets.
