Lucy Letby, 33, whose trial started in October in Manchester (north-west England), is accused of having killed these babies while she was a nurse in the neonatology unit of the Countess of Chester hospital .
According to the prosecution, she killed them by injecting air into their veins or insulin.
“There is no direct evidence once morest her,” said the nurse’s lawyer, Ben Myers, on the last day of the pleadings.
“Between June 2015 and June 2016, the neonatology unit received more babies than normal and with greater care needs,” pleaded the lawyer.
“That year, the number of deaths […] at issue in this lawsuit has increased,” he said. “What hasn’t changed is Miss Letby. She was devoted. She took care of hundreds of babies,” said the lawyer.
“What has changed are the babies cared for in the unit, in terms of numbers and needs, and we are saying the unit was not able to cope with the situation,” he said. accused.
He asked the jurors, eight men and four women, not to convict her.
Monday, Ben Myers had said that his client was the victim of a “presumption of guilt”.
Since the start of the trial, whose debates have often been grueling, Lucy Letby has maintained her innocence, denying having killed newborns or having harmed them.
During the trial, the prosecutor notably showed notes found by the police at the nurse’s.
“I don’t deserve to live. I killed them on purpose because I’m not good enough to take care of them. I am a horrible bad person”, she notably wrote on a paper.
On other sheets found at her home, the nurse, arrested in July 2018, however proclaimed her innocence.
According to the prosecution, she tried to kill some babies on several occasions.
The youngest was a day old and doing well, but died less than 90 minutes following Lucy Letby went on duty. Experts have concluded that there was a deliberate injection of air or another substance into his veins.
