Mexico is a country rich in traditions and culture, without a doubt one of the most important celebrations in our country is the Day of the Dead, various events take place during these dates in different parts of the Mexican Republic, people celebrate this festival of days of the dead with great joy and fervor. But what has happened in Mexico with mortality in recent years? How did the Covid epidemic impact mortality in our country? And how will epidemiological changes in the life expectancy of Mexicans impact health care?

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, life expectancy in Mexico has been increasing over the decades, an indicator of progress in the health and quality of life of the population. In 2000, life expectancy at birth in Mexico was 74.6 years, while by 2020 this figure increased to 77.8 years, reflecting a significant increase in just two decades. While in 1950 life expectancy was approximately 59 years. This means that today we live longer on average.

We have gone from having infections as the main causes of mortality to an increase in the causes of mortality due to diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which together are responsible for around 141,619 deaths, consolidating themselves as some of the main causes of death in the country.

The increase in chronic diseases in Mexico is related to risk factors such as smoking, poor diet, lack of physical activity and alcohol consumption; which we have to prevent in order to preserve the life expectancy already gained in recent decades.

One of the populations that most benefited from these changes is the child population, which, according to the Ministry of Health, went from 120 per 1,000 live births in 1950 to 11 per 1,000 live births in 2020.

Mexico has faced various epidemics and health crises throughout its history, such as the H1N1 influenza in 2009 and the Covid-19 pandemic starting in 2019, which some of us managed to survive. These events have had an impact on mortality and have highlighted the importance of consolidating the health system to confront these epidemics.

Violence and accidents have been important causes of mortality in Mexico; official and government data are not flattering regarding accidents and homicides. This aspect related to mortality in the country requires an analysis of the strategies in the fight once morest violence in Mexico.

However, a challenge that Mexico faces in this area is not exclusive to the health situation, but also in the registration and documentation of these deaths. Data integrity and accuracy are crucial. However, it is estimated that 15% of deaths may not be adequately reported. Furthermore, the classification of deaths may be subject to inconsistencies as occurred during the Covid pandemic in which the estimation of mortality might not be made accurately. In other contexts, violence and crime can also be factors that distort official figures.

In conclusion, as Mexico continues to evolve and face new challenges in the area of mortality, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle, improve the quality of health services, security and registration systems that are up to the task. Only with accurate and reliable data can the country build a healthy and secure future.
