The Impact of Good Cholesterol on Brain Health: New Research Reveals Surprising Dementia Risk

The phrase “bad cholesterol” sounds like a threat, causing fear in many people, and this is natural. Cholesterol plaques caused by a fat-like ingredient reduce the speed of blood flow and interfere with the flow of oxygen and nutrients to various organs, including the brain. Severe diseases such as atherosclerosis, stroke, and heart attack result from exposure to LDL..

But it’s not just the so-called “bad” LDL cholesterol that is dangerous. Its close “relative,” called “good” HDL cholesterol, poses no less of a threat to human health. Confirmation of the conclusions that were previously voiced by representatives of the scientific community in different countries, this time was received by researchers from Boston University in the USA.

To find out the effect of good cholesterol on the brain of older people, they conducted a large-scale experiment that lasted about 10 years. It involved 175,000 people without signs of dementia, with an average age of 70 years.

Once every two years, volunteers, namely they who became subjects, filled out new columns in their questionnaires, conscientiously answering questions about health. All study participants were regularly tested for cholesterol levels in their blood. During the trial, 25,215 people developed significant symptoms of dementia.

Participants whose HDL cholesterol level was 65 milligrams per deciliter were at risk. For women, the norm for this substance is 50 mg/dc, for men – 40 mg/dc. The likelihood of symptoms of dementia in this group was 15 percent higher than in the rest of the subjects.

However, this fate did not escape volunteers with low levels of good cholesterol (from 12 to 40 mg/dc). Their risk of developing dangerous signs was seven percent higher. Research will continue, as scientists have not yet been able to find answers to questions about the mechanisms that lead to the appearance of symptoms of dementia, and how it all relates to HDL, the publication reports.
