The health crisis and confinements have had a very negative impact on the mental health of the youngest with general malaise and an increase in hospitalizations among 15-24 year olds.

Depressive syndrome for 1 in 4 young girls

Public Health France researchers have just published a large study in the Weekly epidemiological bulletin. They raise the ill-being in young people 10-24 years old due to confinements. They are particularly concerned regarding the explosion of depressive symptoms which affects a quarter of young girls aged 15 to 24.

Social isolation imposed at a pivotal age

According to French researchers, social restriction measures in 2020-2021 have “possibly induced a feeling of isolation detrimental for the young people’s mental health, age group particularly exposed to psychopathological disorders, at a pivotal stage in the development of their identity”. They also point to their exposure to family stress and increased risk of harassment on social media during this time.

Increase in suicide attempts

This new study examines the hospitalizations for attempted suicide (HTS)

I am 11-24 years old over the period 2020-2021. For 10-19 year olds, “the HTS rates increase and significantly exceed 2017-2019 levels from the period of the second containment (October to December 2020) for girls aged 10 to 14”, underline the authors. For other adolescents and young adults, these rates increase in early 2021 following the second confinement.
