The Impact of City Living: Exploring Brussels’ Car Ownership Numbers

2023-09-16 18:42:00

If in our country, 7 out of 10 households own at least one car, less than one in two have one in Brussels, or 45%. A number down 2% compared to 2021. How is this done? The fact that Brussels is a large city necessarily influences this figure.

As for Walloon households, they have on average one car per household, a number identical to that of 2020. Our Flemish neighbors own on average a little more than in Wallonia, i.e. 1.13 cars per household.

The composition of the family also influences the fact of having a car: last year, one in two people who live alone did not have a personal car, for only 13% of couples without children and 10% of households with at least one child.

On the other hand, if we look at couples with at least one child, a little less than 4 out of 10 have only one car and also 4 out of 10 have 2 and finally between 1 and 2 out of 10 to have at least three cars.

The number of cars per household therefore continues to change very slowly from one year to the next.
