Ideally, people should go to bed between 10 and 11 p.m. to prevent heart disease and other health effects.
The study analyzed information from 88,026 people stored in the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010. The study participants had to answer questions regarding their everyday life, their routines and their lifestyle. The answers were then compared with the course of their illness. The researchers wanted to know which groups of people had heart disease, strokes and other heart problems.
Various heart diseases were actually registered in 3,172 people following 5.7 years. The proportion was particularly low among people who went to bed between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. every day.
Patients who went to bed following midnight had a 25 percent increased risk of developing heart disease. If those affected went to bed before 10 p.m., the risk was similarly high (24 percent).
What was also surprising was that women overall were significantly more likely to be at risk from later bedtimes than men.
