Research has shown that people who contracted COVID-19 and had previous exposure to air pollution experienced the coronavirus as if they were 10 years older, the newspaper reported.Guardian“.
A new study found that people who were recently exposed to air pollution before contracting Covid-19 spent four days longer in hospital, the same effect as patients 10 years older.
A Belgian study showed that air pollution levels measured in patients’ blood were associated with a 36 percent increased risk of needing to be admitted to intensive care.
A separate study in Denmark also showed that exposure to air pollution was associated with a 23 percent increased risk of death from the emerging coronavirus.
The level of air pollution was below EU legal standards in both studies.
It is known that air pollution is a major risk factor in the exacerbation of respiratory diseases, as it increases inflammation in the lungs, weakens immune defenses, and causes pre-existing lung problems that exacerbate new infections.
Previous research indicated that air pollution exacerbated Covid cases, but instead of evaluating groups of people together, the two new studies followed patients individually and thus gave greater confidence in the results.
“These findings show how air pollution can harm our immune system and leave us vulnerable,” said Dr. and senior author of the Danish study, Zorana Jovanovic-Andersen, of the University of Copenhagen.
He added, “Reducing air pollution must be at the heart of preventive measures for current and future epidemics, as well as a strategy for dealing with seasonal influenza epidemics.”
