Minutes following the US Supreme Court lifted the federal shield on the right to abortion, three states already prohibit the interruption of pregnancy and at least another 23 can do so in the short term.

Kentucky, Louisiana and South Dakota no longer allow abortion as of this Friday due to the law they had previously approved and which takes effect as soon as the Court’s decision was made public.

The organization Planned Parenthoodwhich has the largest network of reproductive health clinics in the United States, and the Instituto Guttmacherwarned this Friday that another 23 states can quickly enforce an abortion ban.

The states of Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming have also passed laws banning abortion that will take effect following the Supreme Court ruling.

In the case of Idaho, Tennessee and Texas, the ban on pregnancy termination will not take effect for another 30 days, according to data from the Guttmacher Institute.

Other states, such as Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, and Michigan, have restrictions in place that may already go into effect.

Right now, only 16 states (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Washington), as well as the District of Columbia , have adopted laws that strengthen the protection of the right to abortion.

In all, at least 36 million women of reproductive age might lose access to abortion, according to Planned Parenthood, which called the decision “devastating” especially for the most vulnerable in society such as “black, Latino and indigenous communities, people with disabilities, those who live in rural areas, youth, immigrants and those who have financial difficulties”.
