The entry of transgender cyclists is a hot topic in sports

“It’s not at all honorable to compete in the women’s event. But there is a reason why I competed.”
An unprecedented scene unfolded at the Gangwon-do Citizens Sports Festival held last June. It was the first time in Korean sports history that a transgender player participated in an official competition.
Hwarin Na (37), who participated in the women’s cycle race, is the main character.
He won two gold medals and one silver medal in this competition, beating other female athletes. She said she wasn’t proud of her win this time, though.
In fact, whenever he heard the news that a transgender player had won an international competition once morest regular female players, he thought it was a ‘disgraceful and shameful victory’.
“Competing with female athletes for medals undermines the fairness of sports,” he said, believing that he still has the physical advantages of being a man despite his gender transition.
He also expected controversy by participating in this tournament, but he hoped that the controversy would spread and the world would pay attention.
As some international sports organizations have recently made a decision to ban transgender athletes from participating in the women’s division, controversy over the human rights of transgender athletes and the fairness of sports is heating up in the international sports world, LGBT community, and medical circles.
Along with Na Hwarin’s story, we listened to the controversy surrounding transgender athletes participating in the women’s division and related experts’ stories.
