The IMF is targeted by hackers 2024-03-18 15:13:58

The leak was discovered on February 16 and the subsequent investigation, with the help of independent cyber security experts, showed that 11 Fund email accounts had been compromised.

The affected email accounts have been re-secured and there is currently no indication of further breach beyond these emails.

The investigation into this incident continues, in order to possibly find the traces of the cybercriminals and the “back doors” of the IMF systems.

The IMF has a robust cyber security program to respond quickly and effectively to such incidents. However, the result shows that these measures were not enough to deter cybercriminals, let alone prevent the “invasion”.

However, it is not only the Fund that has been targeted by cybercriminals. According to Check Point’s report, 20% more cyber attacks were measured in January compared to 2023.

If one considers the victims of these attacks, one can realize that no one can feel safe:

The Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has taken two systems out of service following a breach that occurred as a result of the recent exploitation of vulnerabilities in Ivanti products. Affected systems potentially include the Infrastructure Protection Gateway and the Chemical Security Assessment Tool, which hold sensitive US infrastructure and chemical security data.

Microsoft has revealed additional fallout behind the hacking of its systems by the Russian-linked Midnight Blizzard (aka Nobelium) threat actor.

Midnight Blizzard is reportedly using information leaked from the company’s corporate email systems to gain or attempt to gain unauthorized access to certain Microsoft source code repositories and internal systems.

Financial services company Paysign is investigating a reported data breach following a threat actor known as ’emo’ claimed to be selling a database on dark web forums.

The alleged leaked database contains 1,242,575 records, including customers’ full names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers and account balances.

The Financial Transactions Analysis and Reporting Center of Canada (FINTRAC) has been affected by a cyber incident, leading to the precautionary shutdown of its corporate systems.

While the attack did not compromise FINTRAC’s information or classified systems, it prompted collaboration with federal partners to restore operations and strengthen defenses.
