The iMac gets up to date with M3 chips

It’s been two years since the iMac was last updated, still limited to the now obsolete M1 chip. This Tuesday, Apple is allowing its most affordable Mac to update with M3 chips.

To conclude its “Monstrously Fast” Halloween keynote, Apple took an interest in its all-in-one desktop computers, the iMac. If we were entitled to expect a revised model, with new colors, a better screen or new technologies, this will ultimately not be the case. Apple preferred to carry out a slight interior refresh for the iMac.

The iMacs marketed by Apple have never been used in the Apple Silicon M2 range. So, they are making a spectacular leap forward by moving very quickly from M1 SoCs to Apple Silicon M3 SoCs. A much more efficient family, notably allowing hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing, a considerable gain in performance and a 16-core Neural Engine capable of performing 18,000 billion operations per second.

Let’s be clear, there is exactly no difference between the 2021 M1 iMacs and the iMac presented this Tuesday morning, other than the compatibility of the new machines with WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 or RAM memory ranging up to 24GB.

Unlike the MacBook Pros presented this Tuesday, the iMac remains a mainstream machine. It is for this reason and in order to keep the price attractive that Apple only offers it with the M3 chip.

Pre-orders have already opened for the new iMacs, with first deliveries expected on November 7. Prices start at $1,299.
