The ideal coach for the national team? Unequivocally Ivan Hašek, says Šmicer. He would also like to see Nedved in the team

Why should Hašek be the ideal choice? “He is experienced, he knows how to communicate with players and people in general. He would have respect, he knows all the agents. He knows how to deal with them,” the 1996 European vice-champion listed the strengths of his dream candidate. “I see him as a comprehensive package. I don’t know where the problem is,” added Šmicer.

The implementation team, which will be formed from scratch, will still need to be supplemented. The former Liverpool midfielder took a clear stance on this as well. “Next to Hašek, I would put Martin Svědík as his right-hand man. It is younger, progressive, emotional. In the cabin, you need someone who can put emotions in there. Those two would sit there for me,” he continued.

Šmicer does not accept the option of a foreign coach, which FAČR chairman Petr Fousek called improbable. “It would depend on who is available and for what money. I would see finances as a big disadvantage. If we wanted an experienced coach who has a name, it certainly wouldn’t be free,” he realizes.

I have not negotiated with anyone, but the coach of the national team is a position that probably no one will refuse, says Ivan Hašek. Video: Sport.cz

In addition, Šmicer would also like to see one really big name in the national team. For example, Pavel Nedvěd, one of the best Czech football players in history and winner of the Golden Ball in 2003. “There is room to come to an agreement with him. It would be ideal for someone like him or Petr Čech to go to the EURO as an ambassador. He would represent our expedition, he would be its face. I would like that,” Šmicer dreamed.

In the Šmíca z voleje podcast, together with the editor of the Sport.cz website, Robert Neumann, they addressed the trio of offenders who left the last national team meeting prematurely due to a night trip to the Olomouc club Belmondo. There was also talk regarding the pitfalls of the still relatively new, twenty-four-member format of the European Championship, and a number of other topics, such as Saturday’s draw for the basic groups. “I would like Albania to give it back for qualifying. On the contrary, a group in which we would be with France, Denmark and Italy would be very unpleasant,” Šmicer suspects.
