Researchers revealed the most appropriate age for women to have children, noting that women between the ages of 23 and 32 had the lowest risk of having offspring with birth defects.
The study concluded that women in their early twenties are more likely to give birth to children with defects in the central nervous system, such as brain and spine development, while pregnancies at an advanced age (over 35 years) were closely associated with deformities of the head, neck, eyes and ears.
The researchers reported that young mothers are often not ready for pregnancy and have to deal with unhealthy lifestyle factors.
Older women are exposed to environmental stressors such as air pollution for a longer period, which researchers believe may contribute to the risk of their children having various birth defects.
“We can only hypothesize why aneuploid birth defects are more likely in certain age groups,” said Dr. Boglarka Betho, assistant professor at Semmelweis University and first author of the study.
“For young mothers, this can mainly be lifestyle factors (for example, smoking, drug or alcohol use) and that they are often not ready for pregnancy,” she added.
And she continued, “While in older mothers, the accumulation of environmental effects such as exposure to chemicals and air pollution, deterioration of DNA repair mechanisms, and aging of eggs and endometrium can also play a role.”
