The idea of a new withdrawal from AFP is once again on the horizon in Congress – La Discusión 2024-07-03 04:03:33

This Friday, the constitutional ban on bills that allow withdrawals from pension funds, which are managed by the AFPs, ends.

As a result, from today onwards, parliamentarians can once again discuss reforms to the Fundamental Charter to authorise pension transfers.

On June 7, 2023, the Chamber of Deputies rejected the idea of legislating a sixth withdrawal with 63 votes. This vote opened the blackout period, since the Constitution, in its article 68, prohibits for one year the discussion of initiatives (whether through new projects or indications) that have been rejected in their idea of legislating in their chamber of origin.

According to La Tercera, as the ban is about to end, some deputies have already expressed their intention to introduce new projects that allow the withdrawal of funds from individual AFP accounts. Through a document, seven deputies called on the government and the Senate to push through, once and for all, the pension reform. Otherwise, they will push for a new withdrawal of funds.

Specifically, those who support the initiative – which proposes seven points as a basis for reaching a consensus that will speed up the processing of the pension reform – are the deputies Camila Musante, Marta González, Carlos Bianchi, Raúl Soto, Cristián Tapia, Héctor Ulloa and Jaime Araya, the head of the bench.

These parliamentarians are not the only ones who have expressed this intention. Representative Pamela Jiles (PH), who has been known for promoting these policies, has already announced that she will present a new project that will consist of taking up to 10% of the fund.

The government has already expressed its opposition to the possibility of carrying out a new withdrawal. This was expressed by the Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, who described it as “irresponsible” to even call for discussion.
