The Icon of the Seas: Unveiling the Largest Cruise Ship and its Controversial Ecology

2023-08-12 11:57:00

Discovery of “The Icon of the Seas”, the largest cruise ship in the world, soon to be completed. A sea monster weighing more than 250,000 tons designated by its detractors as an ecological aberration.

The Icon of the Seas is a 365 m long cruise ship, weighing 250,000 tonnes. Its size is dizzying, the now largest cruise ship in the world is 5 times the size of the Titanic. “We have spent many engineering hours optimizing all systems on board. There is everything here: water treatment, saunas, kitchens, cabins… You also need light and therefore electricity.“, explains Tim Meyer, director of the shipbuilding company.

Fully equipped

Who says cruise ship, says animation. On the Icon of the Seas, you can find 7 swimming pools, an ice rink, and even an aqua-dome, the largest glass dome ever installed on a boat. When everything is built, more than 10,000 people will be able to board. “The hull was assembled in 9 months, 201 elements were mounted on the ship and welded together. The hull is fully welded. There are a little less than 5 months of work left“, says Olli Jantunen, project manager.

A controversial gas

The first voyage of the Icon of the Seas is scheduled for January 2024. Heading for the Caribbean, driven by a controversial fuel. “We use liquefied natural gas propulsion. There are therefore two large tanks on board.“, says Tim Meyer. This gas emits less than traditional fuels, but is composed of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Its impact is greater than carbon dioxide.
