Twist to twist…when you don’t need four runs to win in the last three balls…isn’t this the beauty of cricket?
Last night’s The Hundred was a match that once once more proved that unpredictability is what makes cricket beautiful. The incident took place in the match between Birmingham Phoenix and Welsh Fire women’s teams, which caught the entire cricket world by surprise.
After losing the toss and batting in the match, Welsh Fire scored 137 runs for the loss of seven wickets on the strength of captain Tammy Beaumount’s half-century.
Beaumount scored 59 runs from 40 balls including nine fours and a six. Sophie Dunkley scored 25 runs off 19 balls and Hayley Mathews scored 23 runs off 23 balls.

Hannah Baker, Katie Levick and Emily Arlott took two wickets each for Birmingham, while Tess Flintoff claimed one wicket.
Birmingham got off to a good start with a target of 138 runs off a hundred balls. Sophie Devine and Tess Flintoff added 41 runs for the first wicket. Alex Griffiths broke the partnership by dismissing Devine who scored 29 runs off 19 balls.
But with wicketkeeper Amy Jones coming for one down, the scoreboard started moving once more. Flintoff’s half-century and Jones’ half-century sent Birmingham fans into a frenzy.

Things came down to nine runs off the last five balls to eventually win. The first ball bowled by Shabnim Ismail took a single and handed the strike to Flintoff. Flintoff, who had already completed his half-century, crossed the boundary off the second ball. Things went in Phoenix’s favor as they needed just four runs to win from the next three balls.
Shabnim bowled the 98th ball of the innings, shocking the fans who were expecting Flintoff to get it at the crease. Clean bowled to Flintoff Pavilion. The star’s score was 55 runs in 45 balls when he got out.

In the 99th ball, Erin Burns was caught by Clary Nicholls and Shabnim clean bowled EC Wong in the last ball. Needing four runs from three balls to win, take a hat-trick to win the team, what can be said other than unbelievable.

Jones, who scored 48 runs off 34 balls, was only able to bow his head in despair following seeing all these scenes.
After this victory, the Welsh were also able to take the first place in the points table. The Welsh have seven points from four matches, including three wins and one draw.
Welsh’s next match is on August 12. The opponents are the Southern Braves.
