Because while the Birkin (from 8,000 francs and with an upward price limit) is an all-time favorite, everyone seems to want a handbag from the New York label Telfar. And it only costs around 200 francs.
It is the “Shopping Bag” from Telfar, which is not only considered the it bag of Generation Z, but of the entire year 2023. This is shown by an analysis by the luxury online shop “Rebag”, which annually analyzes market data on prices, trends and demand to determine the value of luxury goods.
Handbag with resale value
The bags of the Liberian-American designer Telfar Clemens are extremely popular: The Telfar bag was in the investigation named the “Top Performance Bag” of 2023. In the analysis, the company writes that the handbag increased in value by 228 percent last year.
Artificial scarcity
This means Telfar outperforms the luxury brand Hermès, which can generate an average of 110 percent of its sales value when resold. But why does the hype about the handbag come about? Because, according to the manufacturer, the Telfar bag is intended to be a handbag “for everyone”, it is quite affordable. But due to shortages, it is still difficult to get them.
The company sells the bags on a drop basis. This means that about once a month a certain, limited number of handbags are offered for sale online. If they sell out, you’ll have to wait until next month – and the next drop.
This is how the name “Bushwick Birkin” came about
As we know, you have about three minutes to grab one of the bags. The limited Telfar bags are often sold out after around three minutes. So they are in a similar artificial shortage to Birkin bags from Hermès, which you can only buy in the store when they are available. You may have to wait months or years until the right model is in stock.
Telfar bags are also called “Bushwick Birkins” with a wink. The name is a combination of the now hip Bushwick district in Brooklyn, where she comes from, and the name of the luxury bag from Hermès, which you can only buy after years on a waiting list.
Beyoncé celebrates Telfar
The trend bag is even being hyped by world stars like Beyoncé. She sings in the song “Summer Renaissance”: “This Telfar bag imported.” And further: «Birkins? Them shit’s in storage.”
So in German: The Telfar bag is imported for her, and she initially stores the classic from the Hermès fashion house in the warehouse. And Beyoncé not only sings about the bag, she also wears it in public again and again. On her last tour, the singer even wore an entire stage look from the Telfar label.
