Franz Xaver Gruber left behind a work that is now known all over the world: the song “Silent Night”. The composer was born on November 25, 1787 as the fifth of six children of the linen weaving couple Josef and Anna Gruber on Steinpointsölde, Hochburg parish, and grew up here. His childhood was shaped by the desire to learn music. He secretly received organ lessons because his father didn’t understand it. It’s lucky that he resisted: otherwise we wouldn’t know the melody to the text by Oberndorfer Joseph Mohr today.
Hochburg-Acher amateurs play
The people of Hochburg are proud of their Franz the composer’s childhood is recounted. It gives you goosebumps when you hear the song in different languages at the end. The historical play is performed by amateur actors from Hochburg-Acher in the Gothic parish church. Many members of the Hochburg and Maria Ach parishes also actively support the performances, both on and behind the stage. Among others, the parish moderator and dean of the Ostermiething deanery, Markus Klepsa, plays a role. He slips into a role that is not all that foreign to him and plays the priest. “The message of peace seems more relevant today than ever before. The message of God’s incarnation, as the celebration of the birth of a small child in the stable in Bethlehem, has brought hope into the world. But this hope must be lived, spread peace and… “To keep love alive in our society. Through rehearsing and playing together, meeting people and conveying a unique message, what we dream of becomes possible,” says Klepsa. “Many people are still enthusiastic regarding the magic of this song today. It touches people’s hearts all over the world and has an impact as a peace song that unites peoples far beyond the Christian churches,” says Gerhard Haring, chairman of the Franz Xaver Gruber Community.
Every third weekend in Advent, this year from Friday 15th to Sunday 17th, not only is the historical play shown, but the forecourt of the Franz Xaver Gruber Memorial House is transformed into an Advent market worth seeing. At the craft market you can revive old craft techniques. Working techniques that were common here in Hochburg at the time the world-famous song was written, such as broom-tying, basket weaving, shingle making, carving, forging, glass blowing, clay work and much more, can be viewed here.
In the memorial house itself there are objects that commemorate the composer. It is a wooden house similar in style, shape and design to the house where he was born, which was set up as a museum and conveys the rural living and working world of that time. Guided tours are also offered.
