This Saturday October 7, 2023, Air France, today Air-France KLM, celebrates its 90th birthday. Created in 1933, following the merger of five French airlines (Air Union, Air Orient, Société Générale de Transport Aérien, CIDNA and Aéropostale), it was not until 1946 that the company, then nationalized, acquiredflight attendant who rub shoulders with stewards on planes. And they had to comply with strict rules.
Severe recruitment at Air France
The selection process is indeed draconian. The price to pay to get a fairly well-paid position.
In 1946, a journalist from Figaro who had attended the selection, described “harsh recruitment”: “what are we demanding of them? Quite simply this: be aged between 21 and 30, measure 1.55 m to 1.65 m, weigh 45 to 65 kilos, have a waist circumference of no more than 70 centimeters, present all moral guarantees, be single, widowed or divorced without responsibilities, show a pleasant face, personality, distinction; have the first part of the baccalaureate, otherwise, the certificate of upper primary studies, the state diploma of nurse, social worker or air first aider”.
Criteria in addition to that of mastery of one or more foreign languages. A “very severe” medical examination is also on the program.
Battle for marriage
It was not until 1963 that marriage was no longer a reason for dismissal. Until then, article 72 of the Air France staff regulations provided that the marriage of flight attendants required them to cease their duties.
A turn taken following a decision by the Paris Court of Appeal following a new trial of a newly married and fired hostess. Air France then appealed to the Court of Cassation, but without success.
