Invented in 1954 by André Carrus, emblematic director of the PMU, to boost revenues, the trifecta celebrates its 70th anniversary this Monday. The king of horse racing betting, which is played on three horses in order or disorder, was born on January 22 at the Prix Uranie, in Enghien. Since then, its popular success has not been denied.

According to the story told by Guy Lux in 1992 in the show “Double Jeu” by Thierry Ardisson, André Carrus developed the trifecta on the idea of the host of Intervilles, who had set up this pari-mutuel betting system in a hardware store in Boulogne-Billancourt.

“Mutual” bet (winners receive money from losers), exclusively played in PMUs (urban mutual bets, which allow you to play without going to the racecourse), the trifecta is first broadcast on television in 1956, commented on by Georges de Caunes, father of a certain Antoine. And in 1957, a winnings record was set: 6.4 million francs for 116 winners. The racers are there.

Commented on by the famous Léon Zitrone subsequently, the trifecta experiencing a golden age. The PMU records a dramatic increase in gaming volume : from the equivalent of 400,000 euros spent in 1954, to 9 billion euros in 1975. But the decline is gradually threatening the trifecta. In the 1990s, horse racing betting was no longer “trendy”, bettors were getting older.

It was only in 2010, with the change of online betting legislation, now authorized, that the PMU is getting back on track. The average age of bettors drops by nine years in a few months. The other side of the coin: the PMU loses its monopoly on the horse racing market. Making the trifecta a bet with a little taste of nostalgia.
