– This is not regarding filling seats and now, this is not big because it is the Movistar Arena – Gambeta told the Alcolirykoz team shortly before the symphonic concert. This is great because all those people who are there are convinced of what they came to hear today. They didn’t come to listen to songs and that’s it, those people almost came to free themselves from everything that we are not freeing. These people are part of all this.
And that’s what makes Alcolirykoz the most influential rap group in the country, that ability to create community, to bring together people who don’t seem to have anything in common, to transcend the borders of rap while continuing to do that strict rap that never stops. it separates from that black origin that makes rap a source of courage to face the world, to portray it and challenge its order.
–Rap –wrote the journalist Nando Cruz in the prologue of the book Illustrious Rappers. Rap Explained to Whites by David Foster Wallace – redefine your city map with overwhelming music. It is music that speaks of and for the community in which it has emerged. Its deeply identity character excludes you, but it also defines you. Without talking regarding you, it explains clearly and by omission what you are not and will not be.
That’s why Alcololirykoz is pure rap, strict. Because Aranjuez, which was his world because it was his neighborhood, became a world in another neighborhood, and this new map of Aranjuez, which transcends the geographical borders that separate the cities of this country, is what creates a community that the only thing that seems to have in common is the music of Alcoliryrikoz.
And that music is a revenge, because it challenges the social order, its hierarchies. It is another type of violence that seeks to put death to shame, as the writer Gilmer Mesa –also from Aranjuez– said when he went on stage to share a few words, to talk regarding this violence, “that of the inflamed scream on a stage, because these guys my brothers, today they conquered the top, but starting from the bottom, swimming piecewise like salmon, with the high pride of the eternal marginal they made that neighborhood cry a state of mind that gives you and takes you away and gives you my fafa ”.
The revenge of the timid
The Alcolirykoz thing at the Movistar Arena is historic. It is the group’s largest concert so far –14 thousand people attended–. An independent rap concert –and symphonic in which they were accompanied by the New Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Juan David Osorio– The people went because, as Gambeta said, they are convinced of what they went to hear and that is a revenge not only for them, but for rap.

Because rap, particularly in Medellín, but also in Colombia, has been assumed as a kind of salvation, as a balm once morest violence. In the article Music and its “social function”. Hip Hop in Medellín, Juan Diego Jaramillo investigates that discourse that presents rap as an antidote to violence, which began to take shape in Medellín in the 90s.
According to Jaramillo, this music and the entire culture of which it is a part (hip hop) “worked very well, as it was a practice that had been going on for more than a decade in almost all the neighborhoods of the city that were understood as “violent.” and that, with very little investment (relatively), one might have an impact on what this practice should suggest, inspire and, in many cases, transmit directly, as has been the case with lyrics”.
Thus, what Alcolirykoz did at the Movistar Arena is historic not only because 14,000 people attended, but also because it is a rap that is not filtered by the institutions, by their discourse or by their resources. It is a rap that says what he wants, that creates his own speech. It is the rap of those who believed in the incredible and imagined the unimaginable, because living from this music was not even a possible illusion. It is the rap of a couple of cousins and a friend from the neighborhood, who are a family, a neighborhood, all the neighborhoods.

–Today it takes me back to the moment when I was sitting on my sidewalk, listening to rap and wanting to hear myself like those who influenced me and influenced that desire to scratch those notebooks that were there in the dining room –Kaztro told the Alcolirykoz team shortly before the symphony concert –. Everyone there (in the audience) and everyone, everyone knows what this means.
On Saturday, Aranjuez was Bogotá, because Aranjuez is wherever Alcolirykoz takes place.
