Before Stan Wawrinka’s second round match in Madrid, a curious coin toss occurs that makes both the spectators and the tennis stars laugh.
Chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani does not seem to have understood exactly what the organizers of the ATP 1000 tournament in Madrid came up with: When tossing a coin before the game between Stan Wawrinka and Andrey Rublev, Lahyani asks the Swiss which side of the coin he wants to choose: ” Madrid or Mutua?»
The problem: Madrid and Mutua are on the same side of the coin. When the coin shows “ATP Maters 1000”, Wawrinka looks at the referee in amazement: “You said: ‘Madrid or Mutua’.” Lahyani replies that he was told that. “So, let’s do it once more.”
But this does not occur. Instead, a heated, if not entirely serious, mean argument develops between Wawrinka and Rublev, who can’t help but laugh. “Don’t stress me,” laughs the Russian, and offers Wawrinka the “rock, paper, scissors” game to determine who gets to decide which player starts serving. Laughter now erupts among the spectators.
Wawrinka’s scissors beat Rublev’s paper, the Swiss actually wins this curious coin toss following a minute and a half! But it remains the only success for the 38-year-old that day. Rublev then prevailed in the game 7:5, 6:4.
