The highest ski resort in liquidation

The company Puigmal 2900, which manages the highest ski resort in the Pyrénées-Orientales, was placed in liquidation on Wednesday by the Perpignan commercial court. “This is the end of the story, we have no idea what will happen next,” said Eric Matzner-Lober, one of the buyers of the Puigmal station since 2021.

Previously managed by surrounding municipalities, the resort, which peaks at 2,700 meters, closed in 2013 due to a debt of 9.2 million euros, due in particular to a lack of snow over several seasons. The six investors in Puigmal 2900 took over the station in 2021, in the form of a public service delegation, with a project to diversify activities to depend less on the climate. But they in turn suffered significant hazards, with a broken chairlift in 2021 and insufficient snow in 2022.

“It’s heartbreaking, it’s a site which represents a certain economic activity for the commune” with four full-time employees and around thirty seasonal workers each winter, underlined Isidore Payrato, mayor of the commune of Err , to which the station belongs. The municipality must now decide on the future of the station, whether or not to relaunch a new public service delegation. In the meantime, it should remain closed at least this winter.
