The High Cost of Driving on the Motorway: How to Save Money on Your Summer Road Trip

It’s summer, vacation time has come and there are many departures. But for those who decide to take the car, the journey can be expensive, especially by taking the motorway: tolls, fuel or snack breaks, prices soar.

Two RTS journalists wanted to estimate the cost of a typical trip for 7:30 p.m. Starting from Lausanne to go to Marseille, you have to travel nearly 500 kilometers for a duration of about 5h15 by taking the motorway. There are 3 hours more by national roads.

Once you have arrived in France after crossing the border, you must quickly open your wallet at the toll. And this year, motorway tolls increased by 4.75% compared to 2022.

The Lausanne – Marseille trip for two people, via the motorway, today costs 44 francs for tolls, 80 francs for petrol and 18 francs for the picnic, i.e. a total of 142 francs, against 76 francs in all while passing by the national roads.

The high cost of fuel on the highway

On the highway, at a speed of 130 km/h, the vehicle used by the two journalists consumes 6.7 liters per 100 kilometers, two liters more than on the secondary network where fuel is much cheaper.

By refueling the car at a gas station located off the highway, it is possible to save ten francs. Nevertheless, most vacationers refuel on the highway, as it is more convenient and faster.

A snack three times as expensive

The price differences are also significant when it comes to food and drink. At a standard rest area, a bottle of water, a packet of crisps and a sandwich cost around 9 francs, three times more than off the motorway.

To limit costs, some prefer to anticipate. “We have our picnic spots. We get off the highway and we breathe for an hour, before resuming our journey,” reported a vacationer.

For others, shopping is part of the vacation. “We bought a little coffee on the motorway service area because it’s easier and it’s hot. In other words, it’s one less thermos in the car,” said another traveler.
