Avoiding or preferring certain foods can have positive effects

A balanced ratio between arginine or L-arginine and lysine is therefore desirable, whereby people who tend to cold sores avoid certain foods and prefer others.

Lysine is mainly found in animal foods such as eggs, red meat and fish, especially salmon, with tuna being an exception. Cow’s milk, Gouda, cottage cheese, Parmesan and low-fat quark also contain large amounts of the amino acid. Tofu and legumes such as chickpeas, lentils or beans remain for vegans.
