The Heat will bring out the jersey of the Tim Hardaway era

Vintage jerseys are more fashionable than ever in the NBA. The latest franchise to unveil its Classic Edition tunic for the upcoming season? The Miami Heat. And on the South Beach side, we don’t do things by halves since the Florida franchise decided to come back in 1988.

The Heat will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the creation of the franchise in 2023 and for the occasion, it will therefore come out of the closet the very first jersey worn by the Miami team during its inaugural season. Symbolically it is strong even if it must be admitted that the great beginnings of the Sud Plage franchise were…let’s say…complicated. Losing to the Clippers at the Miami Arena in the first game in its history, the Heat chained no less than 17 consecutive defeats before finally tasting success on December 14, 1988 against these same Clippers. Welcome to the NBA folks. Rony Seikaly – the first drafted player in Miami history – was the team’s “big name” at the time, but it took until the emergence of players like Glen Rice and Steve Smith to see the Heat become a minimally competitive formation in the Eastern Conference. The arrival of Pat Riley in the mid-1990s associated with the recruitment of Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning then propelled Miami to the heights of the League with several qualifiers in consecutive Playoffs, a conference final, and a season with 60 victories. So when we think of this old school jersey that is about to come out in the 2022-23 season, it’s more that period that comes directly to mind.

For the record, it was in 1999 that the Heat abandoned their original jersey. The Florida franchise took advantage of the transition to the new millennium and the opening of a new arena – the AmericanAirlines Arena – to release a much more modern version of its jersey, a version that is still used today. However that didn’t stop the Heat from bringing out their first jerseys several times in the 2000s and 2010s. For example, we saw Dwyane Wade, the greatest player in the history of the franchise, wear the white tunic with his friends during the 2007-08 season as well as during the 2015-16 campaign, while the Big Three Wade – LeBron – Bosh honored the black and red versions very well during the great years 2010-14. It will now be the turn of Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Co. to pay tribute to the origins of the Florida franchise, if possible by winning more matches than Rony Seikaly’s band at the time.

No date has yet been communicated for the matches where the Heat will wear their old jerseys, but we imagine that it will be necessary to wait until the year 2023 and the date of the 35th anniversary of the Miami franchise. In any case we validate the initiative because unlike some other tunics worn by the Florida team in recent years, this one slaps a lot.
