The heat measures of the Viennese houses for living and the pensioners’ clubs

2023-07-14 14:23:16

The 30 houses to live in and the 150 Viennese pensioners’ clubs offer a cool environment for seniors in the hot season.

Vienna (OTS) – The climate crisis is giving us more and more hot days with temperatures well above the 30 degree mark in this country too. And if even your own home no longer offers adequate protection once morest extreme heat, it can become dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups. With the “Cool Zones”, the City of Vienna will in future create the opportunity to protect oneself from the intense summer heat in cool interior rooms for a few hours. As part of the heat action plan and the WieNeu+ district renewal program, the “cool zones” are now entering the pilot phase at two locations.

The clubs are part of the heat action plan and Grätzl program WieNeu+

The Pensioners’ Clubs for the City of Vienna are cooperation partners of this cool initiative. For example, the pensioners’ clubs offer the Greiseneckergasse 5 club in the 20th district as a cool oasis especially for seniors. There, thanks to modern air conditioning, cooled rooms invite you to take refuge from the summer heat. The club bar has a pleasant room temperature of constantly 20 to 24 degrees all day long. The extended club opening hours and accessibility are intended to make access easier for seniors. The club is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There is no obligation to consume in the club. A specially created quiet zone with deckchairs is intended for resting and reading. Magazines are available. For people who appreciate the exchange with others, there are chat corners and board games. The club also offers free WiFi, cool drinks, and information and advice on heat protection in the city. A room supervisor is present in the rooms during opening hours. At peak times and on particularly hot days, additional Red Cross staff are called in. Important: The offer at this location is not only aimed at senior citizens but at all generations!

The “cool clubs” offer seniors chilled club rooms and shady gardens

In recent years, the clubs have already started to make their club premises fit for the heat. The pensioners’ clubs offer air-conditioned rooms for all visitors at selected locations throughout Vienna during regular opening hours. Other club locations have a shady garden and are therefore pleasant to linger. Because even in such urban green oases it is easier to survive some hot spells.

Additionally: Visitors to the Klub+ in the open air meet in the coolest places in the city in summer and are treated to free refreshments there as well. Here all club program takes place outdoors.

The clubs also offer a great alternative: Inexpensive and easy access to the countryside!

In addition, the clubs offer countless possibilities for excursions with modern, air-conditioned buses. We then drive together into the mountains or to a cool lake. You can choose from three different offers between short, half-day or full-day excursions. The trips take place in the summer months of July and August. The coaches depart centrally from Vienna. The trips and tours are accompanied by the employees of the clubs. With the mobile pass you even get discounts here. The excursions for seniors can be offered so cheaply because they are financially supported by the City of Vienna.

The current favorite offer of seniors: The “Seniors on the go” campaign

The absolute highlight in the warm season is the “Seniors on the go” campaign of the clubs. When the summer days in the city are getting hotter and hotter, clubs offer a welcome change: together the clubs and the seniors go into the countryside and discover summer oases and sights in and around Vienna. Because the campaign is funded by the City of Vienna, these trips can be offered in July and August for a moderate fee of 5 euros. It is also practical that you can simply come to the departure point spontaneously because no registration is required. You simply buy the tickets on the bus. Whether a few hours of leisure in rustic huts in the Vienna Woods, a walk in the forest, looking for a kangaroo farm or a trip to a winery – the choice is as diverse as the clientele of the clubs! “So get out of the hot apartment and join us in the breezy fun of leisure time!” says Madlena Komitova, head of the 150 pensioners’ clubs

The summer holiday offer of the pensioners’ clubs

“Get out of the city and into the cool green” is also the motto of the clubs’ holiday offers. Every year, the pensioners’ clubs for the city of Vienna and the houses for life offer “holidays in the summer resort” from May to September. Viennese senior citizens can choose from trips to the most beautiful regions of Austria at affordable prices.

In the houses for living there are wall and ceiling cooling systems, “cooling rooms”, drinking fountains and much more that counteracts the heat.

The houses to live have taken various measures to deal with the upcoming heat waves as well as possible. Climate change is constantly taken into account in construction projects. For example, a wall and ceiling cooling system was installed in the newly renovated Haus Schmelz, which is operated in a CO2-neutral manner via the in-house photovoltaic system.
In many houses, ceiling cooling systems and so-called “cooling rooms” (cooled lounges) have been and are being created for the residents. The lounges in the inpatient areas and the so-called “living rooms” for people with dementia are also cooled.

The gardens of the houses to live with their ponds and trees offer cool places to stay in summer. They are constantly being planted. In the Garten Haus am Mühlengrund alone, a further 100 fruit trees were planted last year in cooperation with the BoKu in addition to the existing rich stock of trees! Furthermore, each house has a centrally located drinking fountain for the residents. In addition, free concerts are offered in the shady gardens in cooperation with the Kultursommer Wien. Many dates are also open to external visitors.

In the hot season, the employees in the care area pay even more attention to ensuring that the residents eat and drink enough. Drinking and eating logs are kept to rule out dehydration due to heat-related loss of appetite. The in-house research kitchen of the Houses for Life developed “liquid bars” and “shakes” for affected residents that stimulate the appetite. The liquid contained is absorbed 100 percent by the body and can therefore be counted towards the liquid supply.
Fruit with a high moisture content is also available with every meal and with all snacks.

The cultural summer in Vienna in the houses to live

As a cooperation partner of the Vienna Cultural Summer, the Houses for Life of the Kuratorium Wiener Pensionisten-Wohnhäuser offer twenty free concerts for external visitors between July 11 and August 10, 2023. Thus the shady gardens of the houses are transformed into life on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd district in lively open-air stages!
