NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday that the Alliance has no plans to send troops to Ukraine, reports the Associated Press news agency.
J. Stoltenberg stated this following reports appeared that some countries, including France, may consider sending their troops to Ukraine.
“NATO allies provide unprecedented support to Ukraine. We’ve been doing this since 2014, and following the full invasion, we’ve increased our support even further. However, there are no plans to deploy NATO combat units in Ukraine,” said the Secretary General of the Alliance.
On Monday, ahead of a meeting organized by French President Emmanuel Macron on aid to Ukraine, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that some member states of the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union are considering sending their troops to Ukraine on a bilateral basis.
However, following the meeting, it became clear that such European countries as Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Germany do not support this idea, saying that they do not plan to send their troops to Ukraine.
After a meeting of more than 20 European heads of state and government and officials from other Western countries, the French leader said that “we will do everything necessary to prevent Russia from winning the war.”
“Today, there is no consensus to send troops in an official, approved way […]. However, when it comes to dynamics, nothing can be ruled out,” Macron said at a press conference at the Elysée Palace.
