Brad Smith’s comments come a year following OpenAI, in which Microsoft reportedly owns a 49% stake, released its ChatGPT chatbot to the public, sparking a wave of excitement and an “arms race” in intelligence investment artificial.

But the lightning-fast advances made in the field of AI have also provoked many concerns regarding the fact that such systems might pose an existential threat to humanity.

And some information published by the tech press recently suggested that the scandalous dismissal of Sam Altman from the position of CEO of OpenAI would have occurred in the context of internal disputes over a dangerous discovery regarding artificial intelligence.

These speculations were also fueled by an interview given by Altman a few days before his dismissal saying for Financial Times that:

“People now say ‘you have this research lab, you have this [software] API, you have the partnership with Microsoft, you have this ChatGPT thing, now there’s also a GPT store’. But these are not really our products”.

“These are conduits to our only product, which is intelligence, magical intelligence from the sky. I think that’s what the company is regarding,” he added.

Microsoft’s president says it will be a while before super-intelligent AI emerges

However, Smith rejected these speculations in the specialized media on Thursday.

“I don’t think that’s the case at all. I think there was obviously a divergence between the board and others, but it wasn’t regarding a fundamental concern like that,” he said during a visit to Britain.

Altman was forced out of OpenAI earlier in November, however returned at the top of the company a few days later amid a wave of protests by employees and company founders.

Smith also said on Thursday that “there is absolutely no chance that you will see this so-called AGI (artificial general intelligence) where computers are more powerful than humans in the next 12 months.”

“It’s going to take years, if not decades, but I still think the time to focus on safety is now,” added Brad Smith.

The concept of AGI refers to a level of development in the field of artificial intelligence where a system is capable of performing any intellectual task that a human can perform.

Microsoft is believed to own 49% of OpenAI, the AI research company’s founders another 49%, while 2% belongs to the non-profit foundation under which it was founded. But since OpenAI is not listed on the stock exchange, its shareholding structure is not known exactly.
