“I’m going to your house. We ask you to respect us, and we will respect you too.” This is how Sandra Vega, one of the workers at the Jorge Eliécer Gaitán Theater, enters dressing room one, located on the left side of the stage, since she says that a ghost has been appearing there for two decades.

This space, which has white walls and mirrors with light bulbs around it, is recognized by theater workers because it is “strangely cold.” It is believed that the spirit of a person who fell from a scaffolding when they were doing the construction lives there, who is 50 years old today.

The first time they felt the presence of this “ghost” was in 2003, when “a man lasted between 17 and 19 days digging on the right side of the theater, towards the audience. “I was digging at night, between 11 and 3 in the morning,” says Sandra.
The woman worked in the only box office where tickets were available for the performances of Jorge Eliécer Gaitán, so she stayed until late at night. At that time, she listened to “a man who raised the pike with great difficulty, he felt fatigue in his body”.
As a result of these strange sounds, they called the Police and even the Sijín. It was said that there was a risk that the construction would be taken over. The investigations showed that it was a strange energy, but that it was not the only one.

Since then, Sandra had to get used to living with the presence of the mysterious man with the shovel who has scared actors and cleaning workers.
“He blows on them and turns off the lights, he even hit one of the people in charge of the stage reflectors on the hand,” says Sandra, who assures that he once pushed her. “That was during a Peter Pan play, but I told him that just as I respected him, he should respect me.”

It is said that there are two more ghosts in the theater: that of a man who owned the land and that of a redheaded woman. Although they are not talked regarding very often, and some of the workers are still skeptical regarding their existence, they have even called spiritualists to “clean up.”
The experts consulted have concluded that these spirits are not looking for anything bad, they just want to take care of the place, even if one day they appear and scare those who work there.
One of the unforgettable anecdotes for many of the employees occurred in March 2020, just before the pandemic. During a Santiago Cruz concert, a pianist tried to take a selfie and someone offered to take her photo.
“My partner takes the photo, but doesn’t look at it. When we reviewed it we saw when the ghost crosses. It is the shadow of a very large person, regarding three meters. He has a vintage hat. His feet are towards the camera and his head is towards the public”, recalls Sandra.

That is the only record of the alleged spirits that live there and that have been the protagonists of dozens of stories. “Once we saw some children go through the cyclorama, the curtain located at the back of the stage, but when we went to the place there was nothing,” says one of the workers.
On the floor below the stage, where the quick-change dressing rooms are, Sandra points out that there is a red-haired woman who at night enjoys a glass of vodka while listening to music. She “At night she left him a mirror, a table, two chairs, a vintage radio that she used for a stage design, and a glass of drink. The next day the glass is empty”, says the woman.
Through the corridors of the seven-story theater, people say that it feels strangely cold, similar to that of dressing room one. “I pick up the trash and run. Here, several compañeras have been made to fall”, says another of the women who work at night in the theater.
The truth is that the people who have been working at the Jorge Eliécer Gaitán for years have already become accustomed to the presence of these ghosts, they are now part of their daily lives and they even joke with them. After all, they make up the history of this emblematic theater that has marked the cultural history of Bogotá.
“I told them that when I die, I’ll take whoever I see crying,” says one of the employees, joking with his coworkers.
