The Harmful Effects of Electronic Cigarettes on Health: Investigating Dysregulation of Genes and More

Electronic cigarettes are not safe for the body. It produces harmful effects, sometimes quite similar to those of conventional cigarettes, such as, for example, the disruption of mitochondrial genes.

The consequences of the e-cigarette on health still question

The electronic cigarette seems less harmful to health than the traditional cigarette. It also helps smokers quit smoking more easily. Nevertheless, many questions still arise regarding the consequences of the latter on the body.

Scientists are therefore continuing their research on the effects of e-cigarettes to understand the phenomena it causes in the body. Thus, we know, for example, that the substances contained in e-liquids are harmful. These cigarettes are also accused of causing cardiovascular disorders and are not recommended for pregnant women.

But that’s not all, because electronic cigarettes would cause some problems similar to those of the classic cigarette. This is the case, for example, of the modification of certain genes.

Electronic cigarette and dysregulation of mitochondrial genes

Indeed, we already know that tobacco smokers undergo generic alterations caused by cigarettes. Thus, the Cancer Research Foundation recalls that: “About 70 mutagens are contained in inhaled fumes. They cause multiple genetic alterations that can transform a healthy cell into a cancerous cell”.

For its part, the e-cigarette would have identical results, even if less pronounced. Thus, a study published in the journal Nature emphasizes that the electronic cigarette leads to a dysregulation of mitochondrial genes. According to the researchers, these disturbances can promote the appearance of cancers, but also of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

If the electronic cigarette can help to quit smoking, it still seems preferable not to get used to vaping regularly. Similarly, non-smokers, especially the youngest, should refrain from starting out using e-cigarettes.
