The nineties witnessed a great production in the history of Egyptian drama, as it was characterized by the presence of great screenwriters such as Osama Anwar Okasha, Mahfouz Abdel Rahman, and others. The series “Bawabat Al-Halawani” is considered one of the most important series of that era, and the song Al-Tatar is still one of the most beautiful songs of the series, written by the poet Sayed Hijab and composed by Baligh Hamdi.
The idea for the series began when Abdel Rahman discovered rare documents depicting the harsh and inhumane daily life of the workers who began digging the Suez Canal, of whom 200,000 Egyptians died at the time. Abd al-Rahman wanted to tell regarding that era, which he considered forgotten, and had never been touched upon in any dramatic work.
“The Halawani Gate” deals with the history of Egypt through two dramatic lines, the first deals with the period of Ismail Pasha’s rule, and the second deals with the daily life of Egyptians through the Halawani family, whose life and the lives of the rest of the people of the region undergo a major change due to the seizure of their lands to dig the Suez Canal.
The series was shown in several parts over several years, starting in 1993 and ending with the last part in 2001.
