Last Tuesday, a local beekeeper, Michel Lesage, came to share his passion with the students of Sainte-Marie school. An approach which is part of the various workshops organized as part of the apple festival, which will take place on Sunday October 29 in Doville.

The beekeeper had brought with him a mini glass hive, which allowed him to observe the bees, of which there are around 800 to 1,000 in it. Among these he showed the children “the mother of the bees, the queen”.

He explained to them that they were gathering together, tight once morest each other to keep warm since they enjoy 28 degrees: “they say they are stuck”.

The children did not hesitate to approach to take a good look, and the beekeeper warned “when you see a hive in a field, you must not approach, otherwise they sting”. He then explained how he approached the foragers to collect the honey while protecting himself from stings by putting on clothing, gloves, shoes and a hat before using the smoker. “The smoke scares them, they enter the hive and eat honey, then they are too heavy and can no longer raise their sting to sting.”

Honey making

The children then asked him regarding the making of honey by the workers. “They do this by eating the flowers, and more precisely by gathering pollen from the flowers, which they put on their legs, forming small balloons to transport them to the hive. A hive which can house, depending on its size: 30,000, 50,000 or 80,000 bees.

All these bees are essential to biodiversity and the balance of nature. By gathering pollen from more than 200 flowers per hour, thus transporting thousands of pollen grains, they participate in the pollination of flowering plants (more than 170,000 varieties of plants). Without bees, our ecosystem would be in danger and what’s more, we would be deprived of honey.

A delicious product, very sweet and which cannot be consumed by children under three years old.
