On September 9, the father of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted on the former Twitter account X that his son’s X account had been hacked. He responded with a link to a post on Buterin’s account celebrating the arrival of Proto-Danksharding on Ethereum. According to blockchain analyst ZachXBT, users lost a total of $691,000 as a result of clicking the cam link and following the instructions. The instructions asked users to link their wallets and get free NFTs. Of course, there was no free NFT, and users lost their money. Since then, the ominous post has been deleted from Buterin’s account. How was Buterin’s account hacked? The well-known Ethereum developer Bok Khoo wrote on Twitter that he also suffered serious losses from the CryptoPunk NFT collection. And a big loss can quickly add up, since a CryptoPunk NFT costs nearly 50 ether. Since then, ZachXBT has informed his nearly 440,000 followers regarding the hacked account in several posts. To its current knowledge, the most valuable NFT stolen was CryptoPunk 3983, which has a value of 153 ether. X users immediately began to speculate and pretty much agreed that Buterin did not handle his X account properly. One user directly wrote that Buterin should take responsibility for the losses and pay compensation. It is not possible to know what happened, because the Ethereum founder did not speak on the matter. Some suggest that the account information was simply stolen from him, while others think of a SIM exchange attack. But ZachXBT doesn’t even consider it out of the question that someone somewhere paid off an insider, given Vitalik’s popularity and number of followers.
