On the last four days of June, the summer-warm town of Haapsalu is filled with beautiful music and talented performers – the Haapsalu White Nights festival, which has already become a tradition, brings music lovers Tõnu Kõrvits, Sven Grünberg, Rein Rannap and many other beloved composers and offers a pleasant listening experience for both adults and children.

On the first three nights of the festival, the audience in the Haapsalu Cathedral will be delighted by Tõnu Kõrvitsa’s musical trilogy, which will come to the audience as a complete performance for the first time. The audio works “You are light and morning”, “Lageda songs” and “Voice of wings” are performed by three choirs – Latvian Radio Choir, Voces Tallinn and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. Conductor is Risto Joost.

On the evening of the festival’s opening day, you can enjoy Heino Eller’s crisp and exceptionally soulful violin and piano music performed by violinist Andres Kaljuste and pianist Sophia Rahman in the Uuemõisa manor. This is also the presentation concert of the duo’s album to be released in May in Haapsalu.

On Friday of the festival week, Marianne Leibur and Joel Rasmus Remmel invite you to listen to domestic jazz classics. The colorful duo will treat listeners to Estonian jazz masterpieces of yesterday and tomorrow, offering both the joy of discovery and recognition.

The last Saturday of June fills Haapsalu with a rich selection of experiences: at noon, those interested can participate in a conversation where three of today’s beloved Estonian sound composers – Tõnu Kõrvits, Rein Rannap and Sven Grünberg – share their thoughts. In the middle of the evening, young musicians from Lääne County will play music in the Haapsalu Kursaal sound hall under the direction of Lehari Kaustel. In the evening, the timeless creations of music lovers Rein Rannap will delight in the small courtyard of the Haapsalu castle. In the performance of the Estonian National Male Choir, songs composed by Rannap will be heard, which have spoken to the audience during the last half century. Legendary pieces that the listeners know by heart have been arranged for the male choir by Siim Aimla, Kuldar Schüts and Riivo Jõgi. Along with the national men’s choir, Rein Rannap himself will be in front of the audience, adding upbeat preludes and solos to the songs. In the late evening, the iconic composition of Sven Grünberg will be heard in the courtyard of the Haapsalu castle, performed by the Ensemble of the Estonian Electronic Music Society. In Haapsalu’s hazy summer night, the cries of seagulls merge with Grünberg’s music into a sound combination never heard before, offering the opportunity for a special sound and thought journey.

The last day of the summer festival offers listening-watching for children and the likes of children. On midday, you can listen to the children’s concert “Sipsik” in the Haapsalu cultural center. Conductor Rasmus Puur, Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and pianist Anna Smirnova bring the beloved book character created by Eno Raua to the stage. The lyrics are performed by Anu Lamp.

The festival is punctuated by Theatrum’s performance of artist Konrad Mäe’s writings, which offer an interesting addition to the work of the beloved artist. In the balcony hall of the Haapsalu cultural center, Theatrum actors read Konrad Mäe’s letters to their families. You can see the works created while the artist was writing his letters and hear the string music created especially for this performance. It is the letters that lead us with merciless clarity to the circumstances in which the masterpieces of Estonian art were born.
